Academic Notice
Academic Standing
Notice and Disqualification Process
Good academic standing requires a minimum 2.0 grade point average (GPA) for work taken at the University of California. Students who fall below a 2.0, either at the end of any quarter or for the total graded courses taken in the University, are placed on academic notice. These categories are indicated clearly on your transcript. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of their academic standing.
How to Read Your Academic Standing
Status |
Definition |
What it Means for You |
Good Standing | You are meeting the minimum 2.0 GPA requirement (term and cumulative). | You are on track to graduate. Keep up the good work! |
Academic Notice | Your quarter GPA has fallen below 2.0. | You can still enroll, but you must improve your grades. Action: Meet with an academic advisor, seek tutoring, or adjust course load. |
Continued Notice | You are making progress, but your quarter or cumulative GPA is still below 2.0. | You must continue to raise your grades to return to Good Standing. |
Subject to Disqualification | Your GPA and progress are far below university requirements (e.g., term GPA below 1.5 or cumulative GPA below 2.0). | This is a serious warning. Immediate improvement is mandatory to avoid dismissal. |
Continued Subject to Disqualification |
You've made some progress, but your cumulative GPA is still below 2.0. | You remain at significant risk of dismissal. You must show significant improvement right away to stay enrolled. |
Disqualification | You did not meet the requirements to return to Good Standing (e.g., two consecutive quarters with cumulative GPA below 2.0 or term below 1.5). | You are dismissed and cannot enroll for a period of time. You may have the opportunity to appeal or reapply. |
