Accelerated Business Leaders Education Launched for International Students

The UCR School of Business launched its inaugural Accelerated Business Leaders Education (ABLE) program, an introductory program for participants from around the world to experience graduate business education.

The ABLE program kicked off on July 29th to August 11, 2018, with its first cohort of nearly 80 international students from across Asia and Latin America.

Through partnerships with 16 of some of the top universities in Asia and Latin America, including Harbin Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University, I-Shou University, and Lima University, the School of Business was able to recruit their top students to participate in the ABLE program.

Structured as a two-week intensive camp, the ABLE program consists of graduate-level classes and a strong career-focused component for participants to experience the impact that a UCR business degree will have in their professional career.

The program led the students through workshop-style courses on the principles of business development and entrepreneurship. Topics of the workshops included Communication, Leadership, Teamwork and Ethics. In addition to workshops, students had co-curricular and cultural activities to experience life on the UCR campus and in Southern California. Students were taken on tours of UCLA, USC Marshall, and prominent companies in the area. A highlight were the several excursions to some of the area’s most iconic destinations – Disney Land, Santa Monica Beach, and the Mission Inn.

For many of the participants, this was their first experience abroad and a unique opportunity for complete emersion in a university and business school environment in the United States. A key take-away from the program was the new friendships and personal connections that were built with staff and faculty. Interacting and receiving personalized instruction from professors was a novel experience for most, which they welcomed enthusiastically.

The ABLE program provides not only an opportunity for the participants to experience life at UCR, it offers the benefit of an easy transition to apply for the School of Business Master of Business Preparatory Program, and to apply to graduate or undergraduate business programs.

From the survey results, 55% of cohort wants to apply for an academic program a UCR in upcoming years. 100% of the cohort would recommend the ABLE program to others, and among them, 68% of the participants ranked their experience at UCR as exceptional.

The next ABLE program is scheduled to take place in February 2019.
